The High Court in Lafia has sentenced gospel singer Oluwatimileyin “Timileyin” Ajayi to death by hanging for the brutal murder and dismemberment of 24-year-old NYSC corps member, Salome Adaidu.

Delivering the verdict, Justice Simon Aboki found Ajayi guilty of culpable homicide, which is punishable under Section 221 of the Northern Nigeria Penal Code.

The incident occurred on January 12, 2025, at Ajayi’s residence in Papalana, New Karshi. According to the prosecution, Salome Adaidu was murdered and dismembered by Ajayi, who was later caught while attempting to dispose of her remains.

What made the case more shocking to the public was Ajayi’s reputation as a gospel musician and public figure. The violent nature of the crime stood in stark contrast to the image he portrayed.

During police interrogation, Ajayi allegedly confessed to the murder, stating, “She was my girlfriend. She was always cheating on me.” He added chillingly, “I have no regrets.”

Despite the overwhelming evidence against him—including a confession and the discovery of Salome’s severed body—Ajayi initially pleaded not guilty in court. Throughout the proceedings, he was often seen holding a Bible and praying silently, even as the victim’s grieving family sat in court.

At one point, Ajayi’s father publicly pleaded for mercy, asking for his son’s release. However, the court maintained its position, emphasizing the severity and premeditated nature of the crime.

The case was first reported on January 27, 2025, and has since reignited public discourse on gender-based violence and the safety of female corps members serving in isolated areas of the country.

With the final judgment now delivered, many Nigerians have taken to social media to express relief that justice was served. The sentence is being hailed as a firm statement that no individual, regardless of social status or profession, is above the law.

The tragic death of Salome Adaidu continues to serve as a painful reminder of the real and present dangers women face—and the critical need for justice and reform.
