Messi and Suarez
Lautaro Martinez is Barcelona’s latest transfer target and the Catalans will do all they can to sign him when the window reopens.
The Argentinian has given Barcelona the go ahead to make a move and all that needs to be agreed is a fee between the two clubs.
Inter, though, aren’t making it easy for Barcelona and they want 111 million euros to part ways with their forward.
The price is high for any club, but given how much money the LaLiga Santander leaders have spent trying to find a partner for Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez already, it’s even more extreme.
Barcelona have spent an enormous amount trying to find the right man to lead their line, with as many as nine players coming in and underperforming.
The last real success story they’ve had from their signings was Luis Suarez’s 2014 arrival for 81 million euros.
Suarez has since spent six seasons at the club, playing 270 times and scoring 191 goals, averaging 0.7 per game.
The same cannot be said for anyone who arrived after the No.9.
The first of those was Arda Turan in 2015, when Atletico Madrid received 36 million euros in a deal that was disastrous for the Catalans.
Malcom and Kevin-Prince Boateng had similarly terrible times at the Camp Nou, but the financial outlay required to sign either made their respective shortcomings easier to swallow.
Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele have proven to be the most costly mistakes made by the club, racking up a combined total of 225 million euros in fixed amounts.
The Brazilian has since been loaned out to Bayern Munich, while the Frenchman has spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch.
In the minutes they managed, Coutinho scored 0.27 goals per game, while Dembele hit 0.25 per game.
Antoine Griezmann is the most recent case at 120 million euros.
The World Cup winner hasn’t shown the same form since arriving as he did with Atletico Madrid, but he’s still in his early days at the club.
For now, though, he’s averaging 0.37 goals per game.
In total, Barcelona have paid 482 million euros for 90 goals, as they seek someone to compliment Messi and Suarez.
