Tensions High in Ghana Over the Brutal Murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama

Monday the 29th of May 2017 marks an unfortunate day for all Ghanaians and in fact Africans together as the news of the gruesome murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama, a young army officer and nephew to former President John Dranami Mahama was lynched, stoned and burnt to death by the youths of Obuasi-Denkyerea, Central Ghana on suspicion of being an armed robber.

According to reports, the young vibrant soldier was taking his routine morning jog but had his gun with him when some youths of the village who had been alert after a recent robbery incident decided to lynch him believing he was an armed robber as he was dressed as a civilian and was with a gun.

Tensions are raised high as people question the rationality of lynching in the 21st century. It is worthy to note that this practice has become a norm across Africa. For instance a couple of years ago, four young innocent boys were lynched and killed in Alu area of River State in Nigeria on same suspicion of armed robbery. Sadly this terrible and barbaric practice has claimed the life of an innocent soldier who pledged his life to protect the same people who murdered him.Read some of the reactions from people below:
