Nigerian Singer, Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has won the award for best new artist at the 2022 Soul Train Awards, which were broadcast on Saturday.
Tems remains the first female African to do so.

The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual music awards programme that recognises the best in African-American culture, music, and entertainment.
The Nigerian singer, Tems was named the best new artist at the Soul Train Awards in 2022, earning her a second victory at the event and making her the first and only female African musician to receive the prestigious accolade.
Tems has now won twice, alongside Starboy Wizkid as the only other African artist have won such a coveted honour.
Tems won the award over fellow countrymen CKay, Fireboy DML, and other contenders.
It is noted that according to Billboard, Tems is the first African winner in this category.
Tems was featured on Wizkid’s global hit “Essence”, which won best collaboration at the 2021’s award.
Meanwhile, Beyoncé was the top winner at the awards. She won album of the year for the fourth time with her song “Renaissance”, song of the year for the third time with “Break My Soul”, and best collaboration for “Make Me Say It Again, Girl”, featuring Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers.
