East African nation Tanzania has succeeded in making its first entry at the Oscars in 21 years.
This year happens to be the second time Tanzania is making an entry at the Oscars.
It made its latest entry with the movie titled: ‘Tug Of War (Vuta N’Kuvute).
Tug Of War was premiered in the Discovery section of the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
It was the first Tanzanian movie ever to be selected for the TIFF.
Tug Of War was produced by Steven Markovitz for South Africa’s Big World Cinema and Amil Shivji for Tanzania’s Kijiweni Productions and it’s based on a screenplay by Shivji and Jenna Cato Bass.
It is an adaptation of Shafi Adam Shafi’s Swahili novel in which a rebellious young revolutionary becomes involved with a Indian-Zanzibari girl escaping an oppressive arranged marriage.
Tug Of War happens to be Shivji’s second feature, after 2017’s T-Junction.
