Strict Social Distancing At Abetifi College’s Governing Council Inauguration


There was no room for disregarding the social distancing directive during the short ceremony held at the NCTE  Hall, Education Village in Accra on Tuesday, May 12.

A 13-member Governing Council of the Abetifi Presbyterian College Of Education has been inaugurated.

The swearing in was performed by Ghana’s Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah.

The ceremony was held under a strict respect for the social distancing directive in line with coronavirus preventive measures.

Members of the Council include Prof. Emmanuel Adow Obeng (Chairman), Michael Afrifa Darko, President’s nominee and member; Diana Ofosua Amoafo, President’s nominee and member; Agnes Ivy Charway, Phyllis Agyeman Nyarko, John-Eudes Andvi Bakang, Festus Nyame, Dora Darkwa Mensah, Evelyn Asare Antwi, Charles A. Kumi -Aboagye, Dr. Alfred Owusu, Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso, Bernard Bannor, all members.

Prof. Yankah, in a speech after administering the oaths of office and secrecy, says the mandate of the college is to ensure that the College trains students to acquire the necessary professional and academic competencies for teaching in pre-tertiary institutions and non-formal education institutions and to build the professional and academic capacities of serving teachers through regular continuing education.

He urged them to comply with functions stated in the Colleges of Education Act, 2012, (Act 847).

He says the Government of President Akufo-Addo was committed to pursuing important reforms to ensure quality education and ultimately improve learning outcomes.

All these reforms will come to nought without engaging the teacher, for the simple reason that the teacher is at the center of education system as the frontline deliverer and enabler of quality learning outcomes.

He recounted how government had since 2018 been upgrading colleges of education in that regard.

The Chairman of the Council assured that quality will be their hallmark.

He says the Council shall ensure that everything that goes on in the school will be marked by quality.

Noted that the college is going through a transition and that the Council would help with the transition process.

He promised that members of the Council would be be truthful to the oaths they have sworn.
