Nigerian musician Spyro has shared the challenges he’s facing in the music industry. While he used to worry about money, he now says discrimination is his biggest problem.
In a chat with Echo Room, Spyro talked about how being a Christian artist has brought him criticism and less support. The singer, known for his hit song “Who Is Your Guy,” said his troubles began when he embraced the “Jesus boy” identity.
"Once you come out and declare Christ publicly, you enter a war… Banky W told me that his problem started in the industry the moment he proclaimed Christ…"

He also mentioned a conversation with Nigerian artist-turned-pastor Banky W, who told him how his own music career changed after he publicly declared his faith. Banky W explained that he faced criticism and resistance from the industry once he chose to follow Christ.
Spyro could relate to this experience. “My biggest challenge now is discrimination,” he said. “Since I came out as the ‘Jesus boy,’ I’ve faced so much criticism. When I release songs, how many media people share or support me? Apart from blogs I pay, almost none. Yet, they promote artists who aren’t doing as well as me. Why? Because when you openly declare Christ, you face a lot of pushback.”
Spyro added that it’s been hard not getting the same support as other artists, even from people who know his work. Reflecting on Banky W’s advice, he said Banky had warned him to be ready for the difficulties of standing up for his faith. “Banky told me, ‘When I was living a wild lifestyle, everything was fine. But the moment I chose to follow God, things became tough.’ He asked me if I was ready for that.”
Despite these struggles, Spyro remains committed to his faith and his identity as a Christian artist, knowing it comes with challenges in the music world.
