Rihanna Joins ‘The Smurfs’ Movie as Smurfette: ‘In My Blue Era’

The Smurfs are back for a brand-new adventure!

Paramount Pictures has today served up the first trailer for The Smurfs, a fresh reboot of the popular series, coming to theaters this July.

Rihanna leads the film as the voice of Smurfette. She also helped produce the movie and created original songs for it. Other producers include Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith. The movie is directed by Chris Miller, with Matt Landon as co-director.

In the trailer, introduced by Rihanna, Smurfette talks about her happy life in Smurf Village—until trouble arrives. The official story says, “When Papa Smurf is taken by the evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette and the other Smurfs must travel to the real world to save him. Along the way, they make new friends and discover their true purpose.”

This movie comes over ten years after The Smurfs (2011), where Katy Perry voiced Smurfette. It was followed by The Smurfs 2 (2013) and Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017). The movies are based on the classic Belgian comic books by Peyo.

The voice cast is packed with stars, including Nick Offerman, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, and Xolo Maridueña. Kurt Russell and John Goodman are also part of the cast.

At CinemaCon in April 2023, Rihanna joked about working on the movie, saying, “I got to show up in my pajamas while pregnant! I hope my kids think this is cool one day.”

The Smurfs hits theaters on July 18.
