President-elect Boakai Picks Liberian Designer Nyoni Sioh To Design Inaugural Suits

In what can best be described as a big win for the Liberian fashion industry, President-elect of Liberia, H.E. Joseph Boakai, has selected the internationally-acclaimed and renowned Liberian fashion designer, Nyoni Sioh, to design his inaugural suits.

Mr. Boakai, a former Vice President and one of Liberia’s longest-serving Agriculture Minister, defeated incumbent President George Oppong Weah in Liberia’s runoff Presidential election in November 2023. He is expected to be sworn-in as the next President of Liberia for a 6-year tenure. The inauguration ceremony will take place in the national capital, Monrovia, on January 22, 2024.

And as a demonstration of his strong commitment to empower and promote indigenous Liberian business people when he takes office as President, Mr. Boakai has entrusted Mr. Sioh with the responsibility of designing the suits with a touch of class for the historic inauguration.

Mr. Sioh, a US-based celebrity fashion designer, is styling Mr. Boakai, former Finance Minister, Amara Konneh, and other key officials of the incoming Unity Party administration.

Dressing Mr. Boakai for such a high profile ceremony is certainly a huge boost for a fashion designer like Mr. Sioh who has been a top figure in the fashion industry both in Liberia and the United States for more than a decade.

Mr. Sioh, the owner of a couture firm in Charlotte and a A-rated boutique in Atlanta, has satisfactorily styled several celebrities including NBA players in America, positioning himself as a household name in the multi-billion dollars world of fashion.

He becomes the first-ever indigenous Liberian fashion designer to have been contracted to design outfits for a President-elect and key officials in Liberia.

Most Liberians are therefore hailing the President-elect, veteran politician Boakai, for reposing trust in a Liberian designer to style him and some of his officials during his inauguration which is set to be hugely attended.

The decision by Mr. Boakai is widely seen by Liberians around the world as a strong support for local content promotion.
