Nimba Elders Condemn Attack On Sen. Johnson’s Church -Urges Pres. Weah To Demonstrate Religious Tolerance

Some Elders under the banner “Nimba County Council of Elders” has expressed their frustration in the administration eadership of President George M. Weah after the Sunday, May 21, 2023 disruption of the Christ Chapel of Faith Ministry regular service.

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, the church, owned and pastor by Nimba County Senator, Prince Johnson was attacked by a group under the emblem of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Council, a situation which led to the abrupt closure the service.

Addressing a news conference yesterday, May 22, 2023 in Monrovia, the Elders condemned the action by the “NPP Youth league” meeted against Sen. Johnson who described as their son.

According to the Elders through its spokesperson Harry T. Yuan, President Weah and his officials need to demonstrate “religious tolerance, political leadership, protect the laws of the land, support for Peaceful, Free, Fair election and inclusive political participation by publicly condemning the violence and lawlessness inflicted by members of his CDC against Sen. Johnson.”

He also called on the Justice Ministry of Justice to “arrest, investigate and prosecute all those involved in the politically motivated invasion of the church premises of Senator Johnson by violence, lawlessness, threats, and intimidation during the worship service; as their action constitutes a violation of Articles 14&15 of the Liberian constitution bearing freedom of expression.”

Elder Yuan also thanked Sen. Johnson for demonstrating not only political maturity and leadership but also saving an ugly situation by peacefully exiting the scene without retaliation.
