Next month will see the release of Netflix’s first African animated original series. Supa Team 4, the streaming service’s first original African animation series, has its first trailer online.
The action-packed trailer depicts four young people living in Lusaka, a Neo-futuristic city. They are chosen to join the ranks of superheroes by a former secret agent. We see snippets of their fights with a variety of supervillains, such as a large man with metal legs and a swarm of locust-like bugs, a cyborb-like character wearing a helmet, an elderly woman who generates electricity using a body suit, and a crocodile that is referred to as a “man-croco.”
The creators of Supa Team 4 include writer Malenga Mulendema, South African animation company Triggerfish, London-based children’s media company Cake, and French animation company Superprod.
Along with co-executive producers Ciara Breslin who works with Cake and Triggerfish, Anthony Silverston, Mike Buckland, Tom van Waveren, Edward Galton, and Amy Keating Rogers, Mulendema is also the executive producer of the film.
The voices of the characters are provided by John MacMillan, Linda Sokhulu, Nancy Sekhokoane, Kimani Arthur, Namisa Mdlalose, and Zowa Ngwira.
Sampa the Great, a rapper, singer, and composer from Zambia, wrote the theme song for the eight-part series.
On July 20, 2023, Supa Team 4 makes its debut exclusively on Netflix.
