Liberians across the country, early Tuesday morning, woke up panic following the untimely passing of former Deputy Speaker and Representative of Grand Bassa County District 1, Hans Barchue.
According to Ablee Jay TV, Barchue died early Tuesday morning, July 18, 2023, at Europe Care Hospital in Monrovia, and his remains have been deposited at a funeral home.
According to reports, he died after a long period of illness. The late Barchue was first elected in the 2011 Presidential and Legislative elections and got reelected in the nation’s 2017 general elections.
Barchue served as Deputy Speaker from January 2012 to January 2018 of the 53rd Legislature, as he temporarily acted as Speaker from August to September 2016, when Speaker Alex Tyer formally resigned; which subsequently led to the election of Rep. Emmanuel Nuquay as Speaker.
Nuquay is now the senator of Margibi County. Even though Barchue joined the Liberty Party (LP), he registered as an Independent candidate for the pending October 10, 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections.
The two-term lawmaker was seeking his third term during the pending October 10, 2023, general election, having registered as an independent candidate. The late Rep. Barchue was a financial and security expert, and, as Deputy Speaker, he brought such skills to the 53rd Legislature.
“We mourn today. The Chairman of the Legislative Caucus of Grand Bassa County and a friend to my father, Representative Hans Barchue, has passed on. We, however, celebrate his life and contributions to Grand Bassa and the Liberian legislature. May his soul rest in peace,” Charlyne M. Brumskine posted on her official Facebook page.
