Legendary Nigerian Singer, Majek Fashek dies at 57

Nigeria’s iconic reggae singer, Majek Fashek has passed on. He was 57.

The shocking reports hit media early Tuesday morning with an announcement from his long time manager, Umenka Uzoma Day shared via Instagram.

“Today been having pressure calls, well it is true that the African No 1 Legendary ICON has gone to be with the LORD his Maker, Day said.

“Let celebrate him, his achievements, and his family, whatever decisions made by his immediate family will be notified.”

The Rainmaker, as he was popularly called, died in New York on Monday, June 1, 2020, at 11:45 pm Nigerian time after battling cancer for nearly a year.

The Benin state born singer and guitarist began his career in the 80s with the Jastix music group. Shortly after, he went solo and hit major success with his debut single Prisoner of Conscience in 1988.

After several years of dominating the local and international music scene in the 90s, Fashek disappeared due to alleged drug addiction and bankruptcy. He resurfaced in 2013 claiming spiritual attacks on his person.

In 2019, Fashek’s manager Uzoma Day quelled rumours of his death while revealing that the singer who was already undergoing rehabilitation was critically ill and receiving treatment in a United Kingdom hospital.

He is survived by his estranged wife, Rita Fashek and three sons.
