Kigali Court Clears Miss Rwanda organiser of Rape… But Rejects him Bail

Suspect Dieudonné Ishimwe

A Kigali court has cleared Dieudonné Ishimwe of rape.

Mr. Ishimwe is the organiser of the Miss Rwanda beauty pageant.

Despite dropping the rape charge against him, the court said he will be prosecuted for other alleged sex crimes.

The embattled organiser was arrested in April 2022 and was accused of rape, soliciting or offering sexual favours and harassment against the pageant contesters.

He has since his arrest denied all the allegations leveled against him.

Ruling on Monday, the judge observed that there was insufficient evidence to charge Mr Ishimwe with rape.

But according to the judge, he would face charges of soliciting sexual favours and sexual harassment.

Contest suspension

The Miss Rwanda beauty pageant had to be put on hold following allegations of sexual abuse of contestants by Chief Executive of Rwanda Inspiration Backup, organizers of the contest, Dieudonné Ishimwe.
