Tech giant, Alibaba’s co-founder, Ja Ma, has appeared in public for the first time after being reported missing months ago.
The Chinese billionaire had not been seen in public since October 24, 2020.
His disappearance from the public’s eyes had caused panic, with many fearing that he may have possibly been executed by forces of the communist government of China.
His company had prior to his disappearance faced sharp scrutiny from the Chinese government.
He resurfaced on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 in a video sharedby Chinese state media, Tianmu News, a subsidiary of the Zhejiang government’s official newspaper.
In the video, Mr Ma, an astute entrepreneur, was shown speaking to teachers in rural China.
His speech was part of a philanthropic event.
The video, according to Tianmu News, was filmed Wednesday morning.
In the video, Mr Ma is heard telling teachers that the traditional in-person celebration for the teaching initiative had been erased because of Covid-19.
“We’ll meet again after the epidemic is over,” according to Mr Ma.
Zhejiang province is home to Hangzhou, the city where Alibaba is based.
Meanwhile, Chinese media reports say Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares surged over 9% on Wednesday after the video was published.
