Ghana’s Hospitals Overwhelmed With Coronavirus Patients, Death Toll Keeps Rising

Major health facilities in Ghana responsible for the treatment and management of coronavirus patients are now over-stretched, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has lamented.

In its latest statement obtained by African Entertainment, GMA pointed out that the coronavirus situation in Ghana was alarming, saying the over-stretched hospitals were those  involved in the management of moderate, severe and critically ill Covid19 patients.

The Association bemoaned that the increasing case count of Coronavirus can be attributed to “the total disregard for, and the lack of enforcement of all relevant Covid19 preventive protocols throughout the country and importation of cases from other countries via travelers arriving at the point of entry.”

“The Covid19 situation in the country is alarming and dire at this particular moment,” according to GMA  in the statement jointly signed by its President, Dr Frank Ankobea and General Secretary, Dr Justice Yankson.

GMA has therefore called for “an urgent scale up of Covid19 testing and contact tracing for all positive cases as well as strict isolation and management of all infected persons to help break the chain of transmission.”

How dire is the situation?

On Thursday, January 14, 2021, the 37 Military Hospital, one of the main health facilities for the treatment of coronavirus in Ghana, had to shut down its Medical and Emergency Unit (MEU) to pave way for a fumigation exercise. The hospital, as earlier reported by African Entertainment, is to reopen its MEU to the general public on February 4, 2021.

Even though the 37 Military Hospital did not state that it was battling with coronavirus cases, there had been rumors that the premier health facility was facing serious challenges as far as managing patients suffering from the new coronavirus variant was concerned.

Data African Entertainment obtained from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) showed that Ghana’s Coronavirus related death as of January 14, 2021, were 341.

Also, the GHS has recorded 175 new cases of Covid-19 infection, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in Ghana to 56,988.

At least active coronavirus cases in Ghana were about  1, 404 as of January 14, 2021.

Recoveries from coronavirus in Ghana have risen to 55,236.

At least 40 patients, African Entertainment understands, are in severe condition while four others are in critical condition.
