Ghana Extends Coronavirus Lockdown By One Week

 

Ghana has extended its two week partial lockdown in some of its major cities by one week.

President Akufo-Addo made the announcement to the nation on Thursday night, April 9.

Affected areas are Accra, Kumasi and Kasoa.

He pleaded for patience from Ghanaians.

It will take effect from 1am on Monday, April 13.

He stated that the final result from the fight be freedom from coronavirus.

*Cases*

President Akufo-Addo revealed that about 79 percent of the 313 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ghan are imported cases.

He says his decision to close Ghana’s borders has been justified.

According to him, 105 of the confirmed cases came from those who were mandatorily quarantined upon arrival in the country between March 21 and 22, 2020.

As a result, he stated that until the situation is under control, the borders cannot be opened.

*Maintain Good Hygiene*

President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged good personal hygiene across the country.

He has also appealed to everyone to maintain the social distancing protocol.

He stated that the measures have been put in place for the collective good of everyone in Ghana and they must be respected.

*Thanks China, US, Others*

President Akufo-Addo thanked a number of countries and organizations that have extended support to Ghana in its fight against coronavirus.

He made specific mentions of the Governments of China and USA, the World Bank, African Development Bank, the Jack Ma Foundation, among others, for the support they have extended to Ghana.

China recently donated some Personal Protective Equipment to Ghana.

The Jack Ma Foundation did same earlier and the World Bank and African Development Bank availed funds towards the fight of the virus.

Delivering his sixth address on Thursday evening, President Akufo-Addo says “We appreciate the expression of solidarity. A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
