Famous Liberian Comedian To Bag Lifetime Achievement Award on New Year’s Day

Veteran Liberian comedian, Kekura Kamara, known as “Malawala Balawala”, is set to receive the honor of Lifetime Achievement award at New Year’s Day comedy concert in Monrovia.

The concert, which is expected to take place at Fuzion D’Afrique on 14th street in Sinkor, is part of activities marking the country tour of International Liberian comedian and superstar, GGG (Giant German Gina). The show also aims at bringing back traditional storytelling mixed with comedy and culture.

As part of the tour and show, Liberia’s all time comedian and cultural Ambassador, Malawala Balawala will be receiving the honorary Lifetime Achievement Award from the organizers of the concert for his remarkable contributions and influence on many Liberian comedians like GGG, Angel Michael and many others.

To date, Malawala Balawala remains unmatched across the industry in Liberia. Kamara became famous in Liberia for his “Malawala Balawala” show during the dark days of the country.

The “Malawala Balawala” show, with its sprawling cast and wandering plots, ranged over sitcom cliches and social satire, from lovers hidden in bags of cassava to gentle warnings about lost traditions.

He also became famous for playing Balawala, a young villager who came to Monrovia and lurched through life in the late 1980s, and due to the Liberian civil war, Kamara lost it all. The scripts and videotapes of his 35 shows became nothing more than post-looting debris, garbage on the floor of Monrovia’s television stations.

Kamara was arrested early in the war, but managed to escape with the help of a fan and eventually fled to neighboring Ivory Coast.
