It’s astonishing how Cameroonians are quick to criticize US President Donald Trump, yet remain silent when it comes to holding their own government accountable. President Paul Biya, who’s been in power for decades, is seeking an eighth term at the age of 92, despite his questionable track record.
Under Biya’s leadership, Cameroon has struggled with poverty, poor infrastructure, and a lack of basic amenities. Meanwhile, he’s rumored to spend extensive periods abroad, indulging in luxurious European hospitals and hotel suites.
Those who dare to question his actions are met with an iron fist, and the government attempts to portray him as a hero, despite the harsh reality on the ground.
The situation in Yaounde, the capital city, is particularly dire, with the city plagued by filth and neglect. Biya’s silence on the issue is a clear indication of his disconnect from the people and their struggles.
Rather than focusing on criticizing foreign leaders like Trump, Cameroonians should be holding their own government accountable for its failures. It’s time for young Cameroonians to take action and work towards building a better future for their country.
