Yaoundé, Cameroon – The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are set to host Libya today in a pivotal sixth-round qualifier for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following a disappointing scoreless draw against Eswatini in their previous match, Cameroon has fallen from the top spot in Group D, with Cape Verde now leading the pack.
A defeat or draw against Libya could severely jeopardize Cameroon’s chances of qualification, particularly if Cape Verde secures a victory in Angola. Aware of the high stakes, goalkeeper André Onana acknowledged the team’s challenging situation during the pre-match press conference on March 24, describing it as a “crisis.”
However, Onana emphasized that the squad’s morale remains high, stating, “The team is doing well, we’re calm. We’re going into this match with a lot of composure.” Head coach Marc Brys echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism despite admitting that the draw against Eswatini was a “catastrophic” result.
Brys noted that the team has had more time for training and recovery since their last outing, which could prove beneficial in today’s match. The integration of newcomers Danny Namaso and Nathan Ngoumou Minpole into the squad has also been commended by Onana and Brys.
With only the winner of each of the nine groups automatically securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, Cameroon must overcome their current deficit and surpass both Libya and Angola to maintain their World Cup aspirations. The match against Libya is therefore crucial, and Brys conceded, “For us, it’s important to win.”
