Celebrating a decade in the music industry, Nigerian superstar Adekunle Gold recently opened up about the pivotal role played by producer and singer-songwriter Pheelz in securing his spot at Olamide owned label, YBNL.
Adekunle Gold first made waves in December 2014 with his breakout hit, Sade, a creative cover of One Direction’s Story of My Life. The track gained viral popularity, introducing him to the mainstream and setting the stage for a successful career.
In a reflective interview, the singer, fondly called “AG Baby,” shared how he initially connected with Olamide as a graphics designer for YBNL. He created cover art for artists on the label, including Lil Kesh and Viktor, long before stepping into the spotlight as a musician.
Revealing how he joined the label, Adekunle Gold credited Pheelz for his big break.
“Pheelz heard Sade and told Olamide to check me out. That’s how it all started,” he recounted.
The endorsement led to Adekunle Gold signing with YBNL, where he released his debut album Gold. The critically acclaimed project featured hit songs like Orente and Pick Up, solidifying his place as a rising star.
Over the last decade, Adekunle Gold has become one of Nigeria’s most versatile artists, celebrated for his lyrical depth and magnetic performances. Beginning as a singer blending urban and Yoruba folk sounds, he later transitioned into a pop sensation with the release of Afro Pop Vol. 1.
With five albums and numerous chart-topping hits to his name, Adekunle Gold continues to be a leading force in African music, earning recognition as a standout performer and an artist whose evolution knows no bounds.
