A-list actress Cate Blanchett announces plans to retire from acting

Cate Blanchett may be throwing in the towel on her acting career.

While in a recent chat with Radio Times, the Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett hinted that her acting days won’t last forever.Having started her professional acting career on stage in 1992, Cate has been captivating audiences for nearly three decades. While retirement isn’t happening right now, she’s definitely got other life adventures in mind.

Blanchett joked that her family rolls their eyes whenever she brings it up, but she’s serious about stepping away from the screen eventually.2 She’s got a whole list of things she wants to explore.

Fresh off her role in Steven Soderbergh’s spy flick “Black Bag” alongside Michael Fassbender (which pulled in a cool $21 million domestically), Blanchett opened up about getting used to the spotlight. She admitted it’s taken a long time to feel okay with being photographed and that soundbites from interviews often don’t capture who she really is. She feels more herself “in motion.”

Interestingly, Blanchett also shared that she’s always felt a bit like an outsider, so she’s often surprised when she feels like she belongs. She approaches new environments with curiosity rather than expecting to be welcomed.

Earlier this year at the Rotterdam Film Festival, she even revealed that she never initially thought a film career was in the cards for her, happily envisioning a life in theater instead. She felt there was a limited “shelf life” and specific type for women in the movie biz back when she was starting out.3

Over her impressive career, Blanchett has starred in numerous popular and acclaimed titles, including Elizabeth, the Lord of the Rings trilogy where she played the ethereal Galadriel, The Aviator (for which she won her first Oscar), Blue Jasmine (which earned her a second Oscar), The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cinderella, Carol, and the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok.

Coming up next for Blanchett is Jim Jarmusch’s “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother” with Adam Driver, alongside a stellar supporting cast including Vicky Krieps and Tom Waits.4 She’s also been gracing the West End stage in a new production of Chekov’s “The Seagull.”5
