The Tennessee Volunteers secured a crucial 36-23 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, and according to Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea, the Vols’ offense was a different beast this season. Lea noted that Tennessee’s offense was more “methodical” in their approach, slowing down the tempo at times to keep the Commodores on their heels.

Tennessee’s up-tempo offense has been a hallmark of their attack in recent years, but this season, they’ve shown a willingness to adapt and change their approach. Against Vanderbilt, the Vols used a more deliberate approach, mixing in slower-paced drives to keep the Commodores’ defense guessing.

“I think their run game, it’s physical and tough,” Lea said. “And I think they’ve done things this season where it seems as though they’re not just trying to line it up and snap it as many times as they can. “Tennessee’s ability to slow down the tempo and mix in different looks kept Vanderbilt’s defense off balance, allowing the Vols to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game” he said.

The Commodores’ offense, which relies on shortening the game and limiting their opponents’ possessions, was unable to get into a rhythm as a result. In fact, Tennessee possessed the ball for 33:35, compared to Vanderbilt’s 26:25. This was a significant departure from Vanderbilt’s win over Alabama earlier this season, in which the Commodores had the ball for 42:08, compared to the Crimson Tide’s 17:52.

Tennessee’s willingness to adapt and change their approach has been a key factor in their success this season. Despite missteps in winnable games against Georgia and Arkansas, the Vols have shown a resilience and ability to learn from their mistakes. As Tennessee looks to continue their growth and development under head coach Josh Heupel, they’re able to adapt and change their approach will be crucial. With a methodical and physical offense, the Vols are well-equipped to take on the challenges of the SEC and beyond.
