CKay Quits Warner Music after 3 years

CKay has officially ended his three-year partnership with Warner Music South Africa, marking a significant transition in his career. Known for global hits like “Love Nwantiti” and “Emiliana,” CKay confirmed that the decision to part ways was mutual and strategic. He expressed gratitude for the journey, stating, “Every journey has a beginning and an end, and my journey with Warner Music South Africa was a very important one which I’m grateful for. Now it’s time for me to explore new energy and new horizons.”

During his tenure with Warner Music South Africa, CKay released two albums: his debut LP ‘Sad Romance’ in 2022 and his sophomore album ‘Emotions’ in 2024. His breakout hit “Love Nwantiti” not only topped charts but also led him to become the top-selling Nigerian artist on the RIAA list, with the track poised to earn the first Afrobeats RIAA Diamond plaque. With over 2 billion streams, CKay has played a pivotal role in propelling Afrobeats onto the global stage.

This move aligns CKay with a growing trend of African artists seeking greater autonomy in their careers. Earlier in 2024, fellow Nigerian artist Joeboy departed from Mr Eazi’s emPawa label after five successful years. He launched his own label, Young Legend, and entered a dual deal with Warner Music, aiming to nurture the next generation of Afrobeats talent citeturn0search1. Similarly, Tanzanian star Alikiba exited Sony Music Africa in 2023, citing creative differences, and has since focused on independent projects.

Notably, prior to releasing his second album, CKay announced the establishment of his own imprint, Boyfriend Music. With this new chapter, fans can anticipate CKay’s continued innovation and influence in the Afrobeats genre as he embarks on independent ventures.
