Adekunle Gold Opens 2025 with “Obimo”

Adekunle Gold yesterday dropped a new love song, “Obimo,” exploring love in its various forms. This genre-blending track, serves as his first single of 2025 and mixes Afrobeats, amapiano, and R&B. “Obimo” arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day.

“Obimo” (meaning “my heart” in Igbo) delves into love beyond romance, encompassing friendship, family, and community. The lyrics express deep devotion and longing, with lines like “Loving you is primary, only you, no plan B” and “If I never see you, mi o ma le jeun, mi o ma le sun” (If I never see you, I won’t be able to eat, I won’t be able to sleep). The chorus emphasizes this connection with the repeated phrase, “Obi m o, my baby carry go.”

Musically, the song blends percussion-heavy Afrobeats rhythms, amapiano log drums, and smooth R&B melodies. The music video features Nigerian American rapper and actor Tobe Nwigwe and his wife, Fat Nwigwe, and showcases diverse representations of love, from family bonds and platonic connections to romantic relationships.

Since the “AG Baby” singer’s rise to prominence in 2015, Adekunle Gold has consistently evolved his sound, moving from highlife and folk to a broader fusion of Afropop and Afrobeats. His past collaborations include artists like Pharrell, Davido, Khalid, and Ty Dolla $ign, and he has performed on global stages, such as his 2024 show at London’s OVO Wembley Arena. “Obimo” signals a new chapter in his career as he continues to experiment with diverse musical styles. The single is available for streaming on all platforms. Take a listen to “Obimo” below:
