Singer Cynthia Morgan, now known as Madrina, has spoken out against the music industry’s practice of underpaying artistes for performances. In a social media post, Madrina shared a personal experience from 2018, where she was paid ₦1 million for a show, only to face false allegations later.
Madrina claimed that she was accused of making advances towards the event organizers and stalking them, despite being paid a relatively low fee. Drawing from this experience, she urged her fellow artistes to stop undervaluing their talents and accepting low fees for performances.
“Make artiste no dey collect beggy beggy show again,” she wrote, using pidgin English to convey her message. “Na so Maleke beg me to pay me ₦1 million for show for 2018. They later say na I toast them, say I even dey stalk them. Crãzy world.
“Madrina’s comments come amid a public fallout between nightlife promoter Cubana Chief Priest and Afrobeat star Burna Boy, highlighting the industry’s dynamics and the need for fair compensation for artistes.
