Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca reach CAF Champions League Final

Wydad Casablanca of Morocco have secured their slot in the final of the CAF Champions League.

They made it to the final after their 1-1 draw at home against Petro Atletico on Friday, May 13, 2022.

Wydad advanced to the final on a  4-2 aggregate. They won Petro Atletico 3-1 win in Luanda in the first leg last weekend.

The Moroccan team are now scheduled to face title holders Al Ahly or Algeria’s Entente Setif in the final in Morocco.

The final is due to be played at the end of May this year.

Al Ahly are the potential finalists also as they won Setif 4 – 0 in the first leg of their semi-finals in Egypt.

The second leg of their semi-final tie is scheduled to be played on Saturday around 7pm.

Protest over final venue

CAF has chosen Morocco to host the final of the Champions League on May 30, this year.

But Al Ahly have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the choice of venue.

According to Al Ahly, the decision by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) “violates laws and regulations.”

Al Ahly further argue that the decision by CAF will give Wydad home advantage.

But CAF has insisted that Morocco was the only candidates to host the match after Senegal, the other bidder, withdrew from the running.

It would be recalled that Wydad previously won the CAF Champions League title in 2017, defeating record 10-time champions Ahly 2-1 in a two-legged encounter.
