Formerly called Ogun Drum Festival, the African Drums Festival organised by Ogun State government has been renamed to attain worldwide appeal as top artists from the United States of America, Haiti, Cuba, and 10 African countries are in attendance this year.
At a Press Conference organised in preparation for the festival, the Ogun State Secretary to the State government and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Taiwo Adeoluwa revealed that a budget of 50 million naira had been committed to the festival alongside sponsorship by international institutes like the Goethe Institute in Germany.
The festival commenced yesterday with more than 20 cultural troupes and the minister of Information, Culture and Tourism as well as Professor Wole Soyinka were in attendance.
Some of the African countries participating in the festival include: Zimbabwe, Congo Ghana and Benin Republic, and some states of the federation. Private and non-governmental troupes are also participating this year.
