1 person died from AIDs Every Minute in 2021, 38.4 million people infected with HIV Globally – UN Report

A new report released by UNAids has shown that in 2021, one person died every minute from Aids-related illness.

The report also showed that globally, there are 38.4 million people living with HIV.

Titled ‘In Danger’, the report sighted by African Entertainment further indicated that Eastern and southern Africa bears the highest global burden of HIV/Aids with over half of those with the virus (20.6 million) being accounted for in this region.

The report was released at the 2022 Global UNAids conference held in Montreal, Canada.

Also, the report estimated that “every two minutes in 2021, an adolescent girl or young woman was newly infected with HIV”.

According to the report, globally, women and girls accounted for 49% of all new infections in 2021. However in sub-Saharan Africa, it said, women and girls accounted for 63% of all new infections in the same year.

It added that some 1.5 million people were newly infected with HIV last year according to the data, showing that new HIV infections are rising where they had previously been falling.

The Executive Director of UNAids, Winnie Byanyima, says “The data revealed in this report will disturb and shock – but the report is not a counsel of despair. It is a call to action. Failure would be fatal, but it is not inevitable. We can end Aids by 2030. But the curve will not bend itself. We have to pull it down.”
